Pillar College Now Offering an MBA in Social Sector Management

September 1, 2021

Pillar College has been approved to offer an MBA in Social Sector Management. This 39-credit program is scheduled to begin in the Spring of 2022 and will be conducted online.  All semesters are eight weeks long and students will have the option of taking 2 courses per semester.

This is the third graduate program Pillar College is offering and the only MBA in Social Sector Management in the state. Dr. Rosette Adera, Chair of the Department of Business Administration & Management, stated that prior to developing this program, a brief survey revealed that students were more interested in specialized service-oriented MBAs and that many other schools were pivoting away from more generalized MBA programs, making this new degree appealing. This Social Sector Management program also fits in well with an established pipeline of students who are pursuing bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, Biblical Studies and Psychology and Counseling.

According to the National Bureau of Labor statistics, jobs in hospitals and other community service careers are growing.  Natural disasters such as the earthquake in Haiti and global pandemics such as Covid-19 has increased the need for adequately trained professionals who can work in the social sector.

“The globalization of markets, the complexity of social problems and the pressing need for collaboration for an international presence have revealed vulnerabilities and leadership needs among social service agencies and organizations that an MBA in Social Sector Management will address,” said Dr. Adera who developed the program.

This program is geared to individuals who seek to establish careers as social entrepreneurs, humanitarians, church leaders, chaplains, social agency managers, health providers, faith-based organizations, hospitality administrators, emergency and disaster relief practitioners, and international organizations who provide an array of human services to people in need. “The MBA program in Social Sector Management will produce graduates who are prepared to lead in high performing workforce teams in cross cultural diverse settings,” expressed Dr. Adera.

There are five goals of the program which are geared toward developing competencies.  The five competencies are: service leadership & business management, interpersonal communications, technological competency, strategic & tactical decision making, and innovation & change management.

Dr. Adera said there is excitement surrounding the new program and she is looking forward to classes starting in January 2022. “We are excited by the various organizations that are asking to partner with us. We are also excited about the faculty who have stepped forward to mentor the students. We are also working on a set of stakeholders and partners that will build a network to give participants and graduates a unique advantage for building careers in the social sector”.
